Captions

Captions for the deaf and hard of hearing are made up of dialogue, sound effects, and labels to identify offscreen speakers. They are finely tuned to be as unobtrusive as possible whilst still providing deaf or hard-of hearing viewers with all the information they need to understand what's going on.

Captions make your video content accessible to the one in seven of the population who have a hearing impairment, as well as to the countless millions surfing the net in very noisy or very quiet environments who can't hear the audio. Captions are also a good way to turn the spoken content of your videos into text, so that search engines can access it.

At internetsubtitling.com we generally recommend closed captions for most video clips. "Closed" just means the captions can be switched on and off, usually via a button on the player, so that viewers who don't want or need the captions can watch the video without them. Closed captions are extremely easy to set up in most video players and video hosting sites.

The alternative to closed captions is open captions. Open captions are encoded permanently into the video footage and cannot be removed or switched off.
